What exactly are dental implants?

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial, permanent replacement teeth. Just as your natural teeth are made of two parts, a root which holds the tooth in place, and crown, the part you see, so are implants. The root is replaced with a titanium piece that will anchor the new tooth. Titanium is used because it is incredibly durable and also is readily accepted by the human body. After the root is firmly mounted in the jaw, a man made crown, similar to a crown over a natural tooth, is installed. Although man made, your dental implants (same day dentures) will look and function as natural teeth. They are not removable as are dentures.

More dental implant information

When gathering dental implant information, it is important to fully realize the benefit of the procedure. They are not merely a cosmetic or vanity choice. The many benefits of this style of procedure include:

  • Increased comfort
  • Improved ability to speak
  • Greater chewing efficiency
  • Convenience
  • Natural appearance
  • Greater confidence

Once your dental implant procedure is completed, you will have, for all practical purposes, a replacement tooth you can treat as any other. Of course, regular brushing and flossing are still required but there will not be any overnight soaking or other special maintenance.

If you are considering a dental implant, information is critical. The best way to get the information specific to your case is to visit an experienced, skillful dentist such as those found at Pi Dental Center. They can explain exactly what is happening in your mouth, what needs to be done and provide an accurate estimate.
